We came across this brilliant presentation as a case for Drupal, specifically to be used in institutions and in libraries: http://www.vimeo.com/991273. This has a comparison between the proprietary CMS Fatwire and Drupal. There is a brief intro to Apache Solr working with Drupal including some sites where it is in production. We're looking to use the "Apache Solr" module with Drupal for the "India Environment Portal", coming up for the Centre for Science and Environment
